Edición génica contra el virus de la mancha anular de papaya (Carica papaya)

Resumen

La papaya (Carica papaya L.) constituyó un cultivo tropical de importancia alimentaria e industrial cuya productividad estuvo limitada de forma persistente por el virus de la mancha anular de la papaya (PRSV). Esta revisión analizó cómo la domesticación, la diversidad genética, los recursos fitogenéticos, la biología reproductiva y la arquitectura genómica condicionaron el mejoramiento frente al PRSV, y evaluó la edición de factores de susceptibilidad como estrategia emergente. Se realizó una revisión narrativa crítica de artículos indexados en Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed y Google Scholar hasta septiembre de 2026. La evidencia mostró que la resistencia fuerte fue escasa en el acervo cultivado y que las especies de Vasconcellea aportaron variantes útiles, aunque su transferencia estuvo restringida por incompatibilidad, esterilidad y arrastre de ligamiento. La resistencia transgénica ha demostrado eficacia comercial, pero su desempeño depende del aislado y su adopción afronta barreras regulatorias y comerciales. Las plantas T0 editadas en eIF4E no presentaron acumulación detectable de PRSV en una prueba de concepto, mientras la edición de eIF(iso)4E no evitó la infección. Sin embargo, la evidencia se limitó a pocas líneas, un aislado y materiales quiméricos o heterocigotos. Se concluyó que la edición génica ofrece una ruta plausible si se integraba con pangenómica, caracterización de aislados locales, obtención de líneas heredables sin ADN foráneo cuando corresponda y evaluación fitopatológica y agronómica multisitio.
