Abstract

Plants with simultaneous food and medicinal use represent a strategic component of food and nutritional security in rural Andean communities, integrating within a single resource both daily sustenance and primary health care. The objective was to characterize the dual food-medicinal plant species used in Cascas, Gran Chimú, La Libertad, Peru, and to determine their use value compared with the rest of the local ethnomedicinal inventory. A total of 96 residents were interviewed through non-probabilistic snowball sampling, yielding an inventory of 73 medicinal species, from which the subset with recognized food use was extracted. Twenty-two dual-use species were identified (30.1% of the total), distributed across 13 botanical families, with Passifloraceae, Lamiaceae, and Poaceae predominating. These species showed a higher use value index than the rest of the inventory (M = 0.531 vs. M = 0.376; Mann-Whitney U = 845.0; p = .0006), led by Allium sativum L. (“garlic”) and Solanum tuberosum L. (“potato”). Digestive conditions accounted for the largest share of uses. It is concluded that these species hold particular cultural relevance in the ethnomedicine of Cascas, supporting their value as a low-cost complementary resource for rural Andean food and nutritional security.
